Surprise order of iPhone 4

I came very close to ordering a Nokia N8, but after talking with Susan ref. her experience with the iPhone 4, I thought again about the opportunities offered by the latter and ordered one on Guy Fawkes day (IIRC).

I have since ordered a number of 'essential' apps from iTunes Store, and look forward to receiving the phone sometime after next 'payday'..

Will update the blog with my experiences as they occur.

Summer 2010 update

My tech interests of late have been for the Android phones, and Netbooks. The latter include an Asus T91MT and a 1008HA, both with Jolicloud installed as a Windows app. I eagerly await the recently released version 1.0, which early beta users have already received. I'm hoping the touch interface will work better than the Windows 7 one on the T91.. these two netbooks might well be given as presents to the grandchildren. Ada was very adept at finding her way round the 1008HA :)

Androids have been of great interest since purchasing my first HTC Magic over a year ago now, however, much as I like it, it is a bit on the small size, i.e. difficult to read with my eyes. I'm also fed up that HTC/google haven't released an update for this phone. Even 1.6 would give me access to a new version of Maps and better location use. My other moan concerns the lack of access to 'paid' apps in Norway/Nordic after all this time. What is most frustrating is the total lack of clarity in plans by Google and HTC. So, I refuse to purchase another phone that isn't up to 2.2 at least.

Android tablets interest me too, but again Google seems to be holding back access to their apps. Market is a must for a tablet.. so I'll keep my eyes on things, and see what Android 3.0 has to offer.

Finally, Apple's iPhone 4 is of interest, but it too is on the small size, and the recent 'antennagate' farce keeps me disliking Mr. Jobs, and the fanboy experts who find all sorts of dumb reasons to explain the iPhone's weaknesses (and the iPad's) - Chuck Joiner is the worst..

That's it for now. I'm saving my money until a real leading edge device turns up. In the meantime, piles of books continue to take over my house.

Just popped in to my Google Dashboard, and ...

Realized its over a month since my last post here. I have Jolicloud installed on both netbooks and the ION330 now. Its pretty useful, and I like it. I use the Chrome browser instead of Firefox, and have set up a Twitter tab, plus a Google Reader tab, instead of web apps for those.

All three are remote controllable from the iMac, and I can even control the iMac using a version of tightvnc on the netbooks.

What else is new. Well, other than the iPad, Apple becoming totalitarian, and about 15 Android devices per month... there is now a fantastic 'phone' called the Incredible from HTC, which even surpasses the Nexus 1.

Lots of things to keep a tech interested individual happy. Back soon...

Jolicloud: The Operating System Download for Netbook You’ve Been Looking For

I noticed Jolicloud on one of the Netbook.de videos some time back, but I was probably in an uninterested Linux phase, because I passed over it, but a week or so back Jolicloud caught my eye again, and I installed it on the ASUS 1005HA netbook.

The above link says it all I'm sure. The installation was impressively straightforward, so I had no more than a couple of hesitations in the area of app installation, or system update if I remember correctly. Otherwise everything was 100% intuitive..

Since then I installed it on the T91MT too, but Touch isn't active on Jolicloud, yet.. perhaps on the next release which is due out in a week or two.

Then, a week back, I added the ION330 to the Jolicloud list, fully expecting more trouble, but the only trouble I experienced was with Remore Control from the New iMac. It controls OK, but the screen doesn't refresh properly on all but but Chrome browser! I have to keep exiting JollysfastVNC and entering again to select a new page, like preferences, or the Dashboard.

Jolicloud is a version of Linux which fulfills all my expectations of 'Linux for the masses' i.e. consumers who know nothing about Linux, and no wish to.

Using the Chrome browser, and the easy way of making application shortcuts, makes it a joy to use. The shortcuts make it possible to start up an app already logged in, e.g. Twitter, RTM, Ibis Reader, or Evernote.

It will be interesting to see how things develop. I put myself on the beta list, and am using the 1005HA more than my Macbook AIR :)

Nexus One, Two, or not..?

This piece rings all sorts of bells with me too.. the first thought which came to mind was a hilarious piece about Overclocking, which put a stop to my obsessive overclocking phase ;) 

Well, perhaps that was my second thought, because I too came to within a finger tap of buying a Nexus One the other day, and just managed to control myself. 

Very difficult for someone who bought an HTC Magic as soon as they became available in Norway, and has seen new firmware versions and features come and go, while I sit here with a phone I love, but no access to Paid apps, no Buzz Nearby, etc, etc! 

The big question for me is whether or not there will be a Nexus Two in the coming month or two, but my next phone will definitely be a pure Google Experience phone, where one pretty well knows there will be updates available (my only complaint with HTC)

A Happy New 2010

Here we are in February already.. Zelda's birthday tomorrow! Time flies too fast, but at least Spring is approaching..

I have been lax in reporting the addition of an ASUS 1005-HA Netbook, bought in order to test out ChromeOS. I'm currently running Hexxeh's Diet version and its working well enough. However, it will need to become much more tablet-like if it's to succeed in the ease of use stakes..

Additionally, I bought a snazzy black ASUS T91MT W7 Touch Netbook, and after initial disappointment with the performance, have applied the ASUS Performance boost, which helps enough for it to be useful in Touch mode.

These are really toys while I wait for Google's Nexus One mobile to become available in Norway :)
